India in the Bible — Hidden Meaning & Symbolism

India, in'-di-å (fr. Sanskrit)-- land of sindhu; praise; murmur; whisper; occult; law. A country east of Persia. In Esther 1:1 and 8:9 we are told that Ahasuerus reigned over all the provinces from India to Ethiopia, a hundred and twenty-seven provinces in all. Meta. Man's seemingly inherent belief in the occult. India always suggests the occult. It is to the east of Persia- therefore it belongs more to the within, east meaning within. Murmur, whisper, makes us think of something mysterious, secret, hidden. It may bring to our mind the thought of"wizards, that chirp and that mutter" (Isa. 8:19), though the occult that India signifies comes nearer to spiritual Truth and power, or comprehension and practice of the divine law, than does the error that is suggested in Isaiah 8:19. Praise and law, definitions of India, suggest an understanding and adoration of that which is of Spirit, of the law of Being.
