What Does the Lion Mean in the Bible?

Lion = power and courage — the sovereign strength of your own Spirit. Tamed, it is the throne of your awakened self; untamed, it devours. Same energy, two directions: master it, and it rules for you.

How it shows up in the Bible

A lion that tears is appetite ruling a person. A lion of Judah is that same force settled into authority. The Bible is careful about the difference: the roaring lion walks about looking for something to devour, but the lion of the tribe of Judah has already won, and is described as worthy rather than dangerous.
